




Heraklion is the capital of Crete. It is of the largest cities of Greece and a living city. The city offers much alternation; busy shop streets, many terraces on small squares, the colored gypsy market and of course restaurants with Cretan specialty. A walk the port, the old Venetiaanse blockhouse ramparts, the sociable market, the shop streets, the Morosini-fountain (the lions fountain), the beautiful churches such as agios Minas and agios Titos, the large freedom square and the impressive archaeological museum and you will see that Iraklion is a splendid city that lives.
Matala lie to the South coast of Crete, at the end of the Messara-plain, on 65 km. of the airport of Heraklion. Matala became world-famous by the unique position between the red ochre rocks, where many breaches (ancient sepulcher chambers) give these a characteristic face to the place. In the years sixty Matala was the field of the hippies. Nowadays you can visited it at daytime, but at night it’s closed.
On the northern slope of the Diktimountain, on an altitude of 1025 meters, lie the famous Psichrocave (cave of Zeus), where according to the Greek mythology Zeus was born. This cave is called also Dikteon Andron. The cave exists from two parts: Ano Spileo (upper cave) that looks as a rocky cave, and Kato Spileo (bottom cave) that in five small and large chambers have been subdivided. In the heart of the Kato Spileo is a small lake that is surrounded by large collection stalagmite and stalactites.
The Samaria gap is a terrible, intense experience. It is the narrowest gap in the world with a length of 16 kilometers. At some places the gap but four is meters broad with rock walls of 500 meters high. The narrowest point is the Iron Gate. In 1962, is the Samariagap labeled to national park, because of the particular plants and rare animals. (such as the Kri-Kri-goat)
